Eliminating Wasteful Spending by Building an Internal MSSP to Manage Your CSOC
August 20, 2026

CHALLENGE

A Fortune 500 utilities company faced several challenges in running its Cybersecurity Operations Center (CSOC). After evaluating the situation with its prior managed security service provider (MSSP), the client realized the MSSP lacked the appropriate access or authorization to investigate alerts off-site. This was critical because they had multiple security protocols in place, meaning alert investigations and escalations required on-site authorization or full-time employee (FTE) access. The client also struggled with retention and had no effective methods to find quality candidates who fit the organization's culture.

SOLUTION

Needing to resolve its issues urgently, the client partnered with Optomi to devise a solution involving contract resources. Due to the nature of the essential services this client provides, all work needed to remain on-site. The organization was overspending on training off-site analysts and wanted to bring work completely on-site, requiring 24/7/365 support to ensure 100% fully operational services at all times. Optomi quickly developed a full-coverage solution to meet the client's needs and keep threats at bay. Based on the client’s goals, we:

  • Staffed a full team of analysts, security engineers, team leads, and architects
  • Presented candidates with the right culture fit
  • Provided consultant growth opportunities

Our cybersecurity-specialized recruiters presented our best candidates to grow and thrive within the client’s organization, improve retention, handle the extra workload, and cover the off-hour shifts. The solution was thorough, allowing time for knowledge transfer, incentives for earning industry-related certifications, and additional training opportunities for continuous improvement.

RESULTS

Optomi’s specialized recruiters found the right talent that was both qualified and the ideal cultural fit that the client was looking for. Satisfied with our consultants' high performance, the client converted most of them to full-time employees as permanent roles became available. With a 3:1 interview-to-hire ratio, our recruiters not only found the best candidates, but they found them quickly. After engaging Optomi, the client’s retention rate surged to 80%, proving that providing growth opportunities is a vital benefit. Utilizing the new recruiting strategy, the client has launched and completed dozens of successful cybersecurity projects. The consistency of these Optomi-directed teams has allowed the client to maintain a high standard of analysis while retaining cultural integrity. Now culturally and skill-set aligned, the client experiences a steady flow of high-performing talent, with flexibility to promote from within and convert to full-time as needed.

For 20 years, a multinational healthcare services company relied on the outsourcing support of a managed services provider to fulfill their hiring needs. Upon evaluating the deal later on, the client learned that not only were they overspending on resources, but that they lacked all contract proprietary rights. They did not own any of the documentation or standard operating procedures in place in their own company, handcuffing them to their old vendor.
