So, you’ve landed a new job. Everything is in place for your first day, but now you’re wondering: How do I set myself up for success? How do I make a great first impression? What should I wear? What should I pack? How can I walk into the office feeling confident and prepared?
Every year, we see countless Acadomi Associates take this exciting leap into their first professional role. After mentoring hundreds of grads, we know what sets people up for success and what can derail a great start.
Whether this is your first job out of college or just your next big opportunity, these tips will help you show up like a pro on day one.
Build a routine that works for you
Success in the workplace starts OUTSIDE of work. What time do you wake up? What’s for breakfast? How will you wind down after work? These might seem minuscule, but they’re important for setting the foundation of a smooth workday.
Start strong in the morning, rest and recharge in the evening.
- Prioritize sleep: A good night’s rest ensures you show up focused and energized. Consistent sleep keeps your stress low.
- Plan ahead: Lay out your work clothes the night before, prep your lunch, pack your bag, and set your alarm so your morning feels effortless.
- Know your schedule: Factor in your commute, parking, or log-in/setup time so you’re never rushing.
- Unplug before and after work: Give yourself some time away from screens to decompress. Chances are, you may be looking at one for most of your day.
- Take care of yourself: Cook healthy meals, exercise, or just relax to clear your mind.
Tip: Invest in a reliable alarm clock and avoid screens right before bed. A consistent sleep routine ensures you wake up refreshed, on time, and ready to make a strong first impression.
Curate a functional workspace
Your workspace isn’t just where you sit; it can make or break your productivity. A clutter-free, functional setup helps you stay focused and sets the tone for your workday.
- Keep it organized: Clutter leads to distraction. Try to limit this as much as possible.
- Stock your essentials: Do you snack a lot? Keep a few granola bars in your desk. Need to jot something down? Make sure you have a notepad and plenty of pens. Do your devices need charging? Invest in a charger that stays at your workstation.
- Control your environment: What helps you stay focused? If you prefer some type of background audio, invest in a good pair of headphones to keep at your workspace.
- Personalize your space: Personal photos, trinkets, fidget toys, or proof of achievements can help you feel more comfortable and relaxed, allowing you to work to your fullest potential.
Dress the part
You don’t want to be that person on your first day on the job. First impressions matter, and your wardrobe speaks before you do. Showing up under- or overdressed can set the wrong tone, so aim for a polished and professional look. Remember: dress for the job you want, not the job you have.
Your appearance tells your coworkers (and potential clients) that you take your role seriously. If you’re unsure about the dress code, do some quick research:
- Check the company photos on social media
- Ask your recruiter for guidance
- Utilize resources online with examples of office-appropriate attire
Use your best judgment. When in doubt, lean more formal than casual
Tip: At Optomi, we provide dress code guidelines in our Employee Handbook, which is available to employees at any time.
Meal prep for in-office days
Running out for fast food three days a week might sound convenient, but it’s not sustainable long-term—for your wellness or your wallet. Meal prepping for in-office days is a game-changer that helps you stay energized and focused throughout the day. If you’re feeling uninspired, there are endless recipes on TikTok and Instagram that will guide you in the right direction. If you want to go the extra mile, prep your lunch the night before so you’re not rushing in the morning. Future you will thank you!
Invest in a quality bag
If you’re commuting daily, a good bag is a necessity. Think about the items you’ll be carrying to and from work: laptop, charger, notebook, lunch, water bottle, personal items, etc. If you commute on foot or via public transportation, a backpack may be your best bet. If you drive or prefer a more professional look, a sleek tote or messenger bag is a great option.
Tip: This is a great item to add to a birthday or holiday wish list!
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
Take the time to watch and learn how things are done, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek guidance when you need it. Observing, listening, and understanding the ‘why’ behind processes will help you adapt more quickly. Even as a newcomer, your ideas matter. If you see ways to improve workflows or support the team, speak up. Staying curious, collaborative, and thoughtful not only helps you learn faster but also builds credibility and shows you are invested in the success of the team and organization. Approach each day with intention, and you’ll make a meaningful impact from day one.
Your first day sets the tone, so make it count!
We know taking this next step can feel overwhelming, but with the right preparation, you can walk into your first day with the confidence you need to succeed. Approach each day with intention, and you’ll do more than make a great first impression; you’ll set yourself up for long-term growth and success.
